LORAIN (11/19/2010) — About 20 people got health checks yesterday at screenings at the Haven Center, the homeless shelter operated by the Neighborhood House Association.
Workers from FirstChoice Home Health provided blood pressure and blood oxygen readings and, with Fligner’s Market, hosted a lunch of chicken paprikash for about 40 people at the shelter, 1536 E. 30th St., Lorain.
FirstChoice Home Health had the screenings as a way to celebrate National Homecare Month in November. The company is a home health care provider and provides medical staff. It is based in Cleveland and has offices in Lorain County.
“Our goal is to give back to the community,” said Deb Schwan, clinical manager for FirstChoice. “We provide service to certain patients, but we have a commitment to serving people that aren’t even our patients. It’s our mission.”
The screenings are a help to Haven Center residents — many of whom don’t have connections to family doctors, said Sandy Humphrey, director of homeless services.
Schwan was joined at the shelter by FirstChoice Business Development Manager Katie Blue and Vice President of Business Development Laurene Ostrander.
The firm began its connection to the Haven Center through Blue and Humphrey knowing each other. FirstChoice also maintains a seasonal donation tree for workers to leave clothing and non-perishable food that is collected and periodically taken to the Haven Center.
